The M4 Sherman medium tank was the standard tank used by the United States during World War II. During the conflict the Sherman was continually upgraded to address new tactical issues and the Germans use of ever heavier armoured vehicles. The production of the M4A3E8 versions started at the end of 1944. The M4A3E8, nicknamed the Easy Eight, used several technical improvements to enhance the tanks survivability and operational effectiveness. The 76mm M1 high velocity gun and a new horizontal volute spring suspension (HVSS) system ensured a smoother ride and therefore higher speeds. The “Easy Eight” participated in the final stages of World War II and took an active part in the later Korean War.
