The A9 was conceived in 1934 as a 'Woolworth' ( cheap) solution to the British Army's tank shortage. It used as many commercially available parts as possible, such as a Leyland bus engine, in order to get it into production quickly. Though it was armed the impressive , for its time, 2 pounder AT gun. Unfortunately, due to this design approach, the tank proved to be very unreliable. Most of its losses in the 1940 French campaign were due to mechanical breakdown.
