Designed as a counter to the Russian T34 the Panther D made its battlefield debut at the Battle of Kursk but with mixed results. The gun and armour protection was deemed adequate but many of the tanks simply broke down.
The tank was rushed into service too quickly and suffered too many teething troubles which weren't properly ironed out until the appearance of the Ausf G
