The Allies realised that as good as the Sherman tank was its 75mm gun struggled to defeat the armour on the latest German Panthers and Tigers. As an interim solution the A4 version was upgunned with the fearsome 17 Pounder gun which could was more than capable of defeating them at battlefield ranges.
